At the end of the service there is performance of a piano piece by Debussy played by Kathia Buniatishvili. This is followed by a personal message from Bishop Martyn.
There is audio or video accompaniment to hymns, readings and prayers.
The hymns were recorded remotely by the Choral Scholars of St Martin-in-the-Fields in their homes, and edited together.
You may like to have a candle ready to light with John at the start of our service.

Our opening hymn is 'How great thou art'
1 O Lord my God! when I in awesome wonder
consider all the works Thy hand hath made, I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder, thy power throughout the universe displayed: Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to thee, How great thou art! How great thou art! Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee, How great thou art! How great thou art! 2 When through the woods and forest glades I wander and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees; when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur, and hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze; Refrain 3 And when I think that God, his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in. that on the cross my burden gladly bearing, he bled and died to take away my sin: Refrain 4 When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation and take me home – what joy shall fill my heart! Then shall I bow in humble adoration and there proclaim, my God, how great thou art! Reflect on the last week and on your relationships.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
- - What good things have come from God last week?
- - Where have I fallen short?
- - What might I do next week?
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

The special prayer for today, 4th Sunday after Trinity
O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: increase and multiply upon us your mercy; that with you as our ruler and guide we may so pass through things temporal that we lose not our hold on things eternal; grant this, heavenly Father, for our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. |
Our next hymn is 'Be still for the presence of the Lord'.
Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One is here;
come bow before Him now with reverence and fear. in Him no sin is found, we stand on holy ground; be still, for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One is here. Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around; He burns with holy fire, with splendour He is crowned. How awesome is the sight, our radiant King of light! Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around. Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place; He comes to cleanse and heal, to minister His grace. No work too hard for Him, in faith receive from Him; be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place. The Epistle reading for today is Romans 7.15-25a
15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate, I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. 21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! |
Paul will now share some thoughts on the Epistle.
We now have our next hymn, 'Jesus shall reign'. after which Paul will lead us in our intercessions.
1 Jesus shall reign where'er the sun
does his successive journeys run; his kingdom stretch from shore to shore, till moons shall wax and wane no more. 2 People and realms of ev'ry tongue dwell on his love with sweetest song, and infant voices shall proclaim their early blessings on his name. 3 To him shall endless prayer be made and praises throng to crown his head; his name like incense shall arise with ev'ry morning sacrifice. 4 Let ev'ry creature rise and bring peculiar honours to our King; angels descend with songs again, and earth repeat the loud amen. Isaac Watts (1674-1748) |
Paul will now lead us in our intercessions.
|
V Heal us, Lord:
R and use us to your glory. |
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

We say together the prayer of General Thanksgiving
Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you most humble and hearty thanks for all your goodness and loving kindness. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And give us, we pray, such a sense of all your mercies that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, for ever and ever. Amen. |
Before John closes our service, we sing 'The Spirit lives to set us free' .
1 The Spirit lives to set us free,
walk, walk in the light. He binds us all in unity, walk, walk in the light. Walk in the light, walk in the light, walk in the light, walk in the light of the Lord 2 Jesus promised life to all, walk, walk in the light. The dead were wakened by his call, walk, walk in the light. Chorus 3 By Jesus' love our wounds are healed, walk, walk in the light. The Father's kindness is revealed, walk, walk in the light. Chorus 4 The Spirit lives in you and me, walk, walk in the light. His light will shine for all to see, walk, walk in the light. Chorus Damian Lundy (1940-1997) © 1978 Kevin Mayhew Ltd |
