Welcome to our Online Sunday service for the eighth Sunday after Trinity. Please click on the items below to follow the service at your own pace.
There is audio or video accompaniment to hymns, readings and prayers.
The first 3 hymns were recorded remotely by the Choral Scholars of St Martin-in-the-Fields in their homes, and edited together.
We welcome Mike who is joining John in the service and will be reflecting on the Gospel.
You may like to have a candle ready to light with John at the start of our service.
Our opening hymn is 'How great Thou art'.
1       O Lord my God! when I in awesome wonder
          consider all the works Thy hand hath made,
          I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
          thy power throughout the universe displayed:

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to thee,
          How great thou art! How great thou art!
          Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
          How great thou art! How great thou art!

2       When through the woods and forest glades I wander
          and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
          when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
          and hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze;
          Refrain

3       And when I think that God, his Son not sparing,
          sent him to die, I scarce can take it in.
          that on the cross my burden gladly bearing,
          he bled and died to take away my sin:
          Refrain

4       When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
          and take me home – what joy shall fill my heart!
          Then shall I bow in humble adoration
          and there proclaim, my God, how great thou art!
          Refrain

Reflect on the last week and on your relationships.
  • -  What good things have come from God last week?
  • -  Where have I fallen short?
  • -  What might I do next week?
You may wish to say or pray:
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
The special prayer for today, 8th Sunday after Trinity

Lord God,
your Son left the riches of heaven
and became poor for our sake:
when we prosper save us from pride,
when we are needy save us from despair,
that we may trust in you alone;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Our next hymn is 'For the fruits of his creation'.
1       For the fruits of his creation,
          Thanks be to God;
          For his gifts to every nation,
          Thanks be to God;
          For the ploughing, sowing, reaping,
          Silent growth while we are sleeping,
          Future needs in earth's safe-keeping,
          Thanks be to God.

2       In the just reward of labour,
          God's will is done;
          In the help we give our neighbour,
          God's will is done;
          In our world-wide task of caring
          For the hungry and despairing,
          In the harvests we are sharing,
          God's will is done.

3       For the harvests of his Spirit,
          Thanks be to God;
          For the good we all inherit,
          Thanks be to God;
          For the wonders that astound us,
          For the truths that still confound us,
          Most of all that love has found us,
          Thanks be to God.

The  Gospel for the 8th Sunday after Trinity Matthew 14.13-21Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”

16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.

18 “Bring them here to me,”
he said.
19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Mike will now share some thoughts on the Gospel .
 We now have our next hymn, 'The Spirit lives'.  after which Mike will lead us in our intercessions.
1       The Spirit lives to set us free,
          walk, walk in the light.
          He binds us all in unity,
          walk, walk in the light.
          Walk in the light, walk in the light,
          walk in the light, walk in the light of the Lord

2       Jesus promised life to all,
          walk, walk in the light.
          The dead were wakened by his call,
          walk, walk in the light.
          Chorus

3       By Jesus' love our wounds are healed,
          walk, walk in the light.
          The Father's kindness is revealed,
          walk, walk in the light.
          Chorus

4       The Spirit lives in you and me,
          walk, walk in the light.
          His light will shine for all to see,
          walk, walk in the light.
          Chorus

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
We say together the prayer of General Thanksgiving
Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you most humble and hearty thanks
for all your goodness and loving kindness.
We bless you for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ,
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And give us, we pray, such a sense of all your mercies
that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful,
and that we show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up ourselves to your service,
and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be all honour and glory, for ever and ever.
Amen.
This week we conclude our service with a jolly tune on the organ as George Baker performs "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin on 79-rank Garland Pipe Organ (2003) at First United Methodist Church, Wichita Falls, Texas,
