Welcome to our Online Sunday service for the ninth Sunday after Trinity. Please click on the items below to follow the service at your own pace.
There is audio or video accompaniment to hymns, readings and prayers.
The first and last hymns were recorded remotely by the Choral Scholars of St Martin-in-the-Fields in their homes, and edited together.
We welcome Paul who is joining John in the service and will be reflecting on the Gospel and leading the intercessions.
You may like to have a candle ready to light with John at the start of our service.  You may like to join in when the text is in red.
Our opening hymn is 'Dear Lord and father of mankind'.
1       Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
          forgive our foolish ways;
          re-clothe us in our rightful mind;
          in purer lives thy service find,
          in deeper reverence, praise.

2       In simple trust like theirs who heard
          beside the Syrian sea
          the gracious calling of the Lord,
          let us, like them, without a word
          rise up and follow thee.

3       Drop thy still dews of quietness,
          till all our strivings cease;
          take from our souls the strain and stress,
          and let our ordered lives confess
          the beauty of thy peace.

4       Breathe through the heats of our desire
          thy coolness and thy balm;
          let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
          speak through the earthquake, wind and fire,
          O still small voice of calm.
John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892)
Reflect on the last week and on your relationships.
  • -  What good things have come from God last week?
  • -  Where have I fallen short?
  • -  What might I do next week?
You may wish to say or pray:
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

The special prayer for today, 9th Sunday after Trinity

Almighty God,
who sent your Holy Spirit
to be the life and light of your Church:
open our hearts to the riches of your grace,
that we may bring forth the fruit of the Spirit
in love and joy and peace;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen

Our next hymn is 'Great is thy faithfulness' recorded by the BBC at Canterbury cathedral.
The  Gospel for the 9th Sunday after Trinity Matthew 14.22-33
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew
Glory to you, O Lord
22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. 25 And early in the morning he came walking towards them on the lake. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified, saying, ‘It is a ghost!’ And they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, ‘Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.’

28 Peter answered him, ‘Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.’ 29 He said, ‘Come.’ So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came towards Jesus. 30 But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, ‘You of little faith, why did you doubt?’ 32 When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God.’
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
Paul will now share some thoughts on the Gospel .
 We now have our next hymn, 'Go forth and tell the greatness of our Lord' recorded by the BBC.
Lord our God
let only your will be done.
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
We say together the prayer of General Thanksgiving
Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you most humble and hearty thanks
for all your goodness and loving kindness.
We bless you for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ,
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And give us, we pray, such a sense of all your mercies
that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful,
and that we show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up ourselves to your service,
and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be all honour and glory, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Our closing hymn is 'At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow'.
1          At the name of Jesus
            every knee shall bow,
            every tongue confess him
            King of Glory now:
            'tis the Father's pleasure
            we should call him Lord,
            who from the beginning
            was the mighty Word:

2          Humbled for a season,
            to receive a name
            from the lips of sinners
            unto whom he came,
            faithfully he bore it
            spotless to the last,
            brought it back victorious
            when from death he passed.

3          Name him, Christians, name him,
            with love strong as death,
            but with awe and wonder,
            and with bated breath;
            he is God the Saviour,
            he is Christ the Lord,
            ever to be worshipped,
            trusted and adored.

4           Surely, this Lord Jesus
             shall return again,
             with his Father's glory,
             with his angel train;
             for all wreaths of empire
             meet upon his brow,
             and our hearts confess him
             King of Glory now.

Caroline Maria Noel (1817-1877)
