GETTING MARRIED IN ONE OF OUR CHURCHES.
The Churches in our group (Benefice) are all very characterful and beautiful. They are also very ancient and the atmosphere and ambience is ideal for those who want to have their wedding in a Christian place of worship. Couples have been getting married in them for hundreds of years and we want them to continue to be extra special wedding locations for many years to come.
Because the Church of England is an established church the clergy can act as Registrars as well as parish priests. This means that we have a special process for marrying in our churches.
For couples both of whom have never been married before
Very simply there are three prohibitions to being remarried in church:
If you live anywhere in the Ironstone Villages, or have a relevant qualifying connection, we would be delighted to prepare with you to make your Marriage Service a truly joyful occasion for you, your families and friends.
Please be aware that, in some ways, booking a church for your wedding is different from the rest of what is organised for a wedding day. By taking place in a church setting, your wedding service will be an act of worship. Although we shall do our best to ensure that your service has the elements in it that you would particularly like (eg music and readings), there are legal matters that cannot be changed, and other aspects to the service that are essential to the character of Christian worship. Booking the church is not just a commercial transaction like most other things you will arrange for your day. There is of course a fee which helps the Church to cover its own costs, and a good deal of voluntary input by church members too.
We would also be pleased to discuss the possibility of a Service of Blessing (as an alternative to the church Marriage Service) or the Renewal of Wedding Vows.

Because the Church of England is an established church the clergy can act as Registrars as well as parish priests. This means that we have a special process for marrying in our churches.
For couples both of whom have never been married before
- If you or your fiance live in one of our parishes then you can marry in any of our churches. (Our churches can seat from 50 people in the smallest up to 250 people at Waltham.) Most people choose their own parish church and some of our brides walk to church with their guests!
- If you have a qualifying connection with one of our churches then you can get married in any of our churches. A qualifying connection might be through previous residence, or close family contacts etc (see the Church of England website for accurate details)
- If you both, or one of you, attend the church for at least six months then you establish a qualifying connection and are eligible to go on our members list (Electoral Roll). We ask that you come at least once a month over a six month period.
Very simply there are three prohibitions to being remarried in church:
- No adultery should be involved as the cause of the breakdown of a previous marriage.
- All should be well settled from any previous marriage, especially if children are involved
- The church should not be brought into disrepute by your marriage
